Moments of a Little Bliss

I am linking up with Liv Lane and her Little Bliss List today.

1. Looking up...in NYC you just don't do it...unless you are a tourist. Well, I vow to do it more often.

2. Visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art on July 4th with Superman. A little exercise for my knees, air conditioning, his hand in mine, and art - it was lovely.

3. Time spent playing and experimenting with watercolors. I am having so much fun doodling with watercolors.

4. Learning that my newly adopted cat, Java, is still a kitten, under a year, she gained a pound in the last 5 weeks and grew. There is hope that I can break her habit of biting, yippee.

Day 21 May Flower Challenge & Shared Messages from the Universe

 Welcome to day 21 of the May Flower Challenge.

I'm fascinated with flowers. They are all over my tiny apartment. I photograph them all the time. I draw, paint, doodle them, create them out of paper... I also see them all over the NYC. Each day I will post flowers and I hope that you will join in. The only rules are that your blog post or flickr photo that you link must contain flowers. Click above on the May Flower Challenge Page to learn more.  

On Mondays, I usually do a post called Shared Message from the Universe.

It is my belief that messages from the universe speak to me and remind me of something that is inside of me. When I first see them, I often don't even know what is really being advertised. Instead, the message conjures emotions or thoughts relating to something that is going on within me; in my heart, in my mind, in my soul. I see them on billboards, in magazines, store windows, church plaques...everywhere.

I secretly call them soul whispers.

Last week I shared the photo of the truck with a flower on the back of it. If you missed it click here. This week. as I was looking back through my photos from the past month, I came across the above photo.  This was taken the same day as last week's Shared Message from the Universe photo.

What are you crazy for?

I remember taking the picture and thinking...chocolate, coffee, sand between my toes, the sun on my face, animals, creating art, Superman, my family, my friends who are my family, cowboy boots, being in the moment, taking pictures, watching people, discovering something new, flowers, hot tea, a good book...

The photo below is of my favorite flower beds. This townhouse is on 79th Street in Manhattan and every year it has the most beautiful flower beds.  Whomever lives here must be crazy about flowers, too.

Last weekend as Superman and I walked home from Central Park we walked past this building (below). We've walked past it numerous times before during the past 5 years but I've never looked up before.

This building is between 10-12 stories high (I'm going by memory). Whomever designed this building must have loved flowers - at least I'd like to think so.

Day 10 May Flower Challenge

 Welcome to day 10 of the May Flower Challenge.

I'm fascinated with flowers. They are all over my tiny apartment. I photograph them all the time. I draw, paint, doodle them, create them out of paper... I also see them all over the NYC. Today, I'll be honest, I am tired. No, not tired of the challenge but just plain tired. I have a more than full time day job and I traveled Tuesday. It was a long day; up at 5am and not in bed until after 11pm. I am usually tired the next day but it is the day after that seems to bite me in the butt harder and that my friends is today. Needless to say no creating during the past 2 days and I can tell that I need my fix of doodling so I may need to sneak a few doodles in while trying to stay awake at my desk.

So today, I am going to share some photos. Today is all about perspective and how you see the flowers in your world.

Sometime you can change the way a flower looks by changing how you look at it.

We almost always see flowers from above or the side but what if you laid your camera on the ground, looked up and took the picture?

Well, this would happen.

And, this next picture was taken with my 35mm and I blurred the background. This is called the depth of field in photography. If you are using a 35mm camera and you want a blurred background change the f-stops (smaller the number the more blur you will get).

Here is another example. I wanted to capture the water droplets on one of the single flowers of this phlox plant. 

I love to set my flowers against a plain background. Since the flowers that I take pictures of are all alive (I don't cut them and do still life photos) sometimes this can mean that I look a little silly when I take pictures. This picture of the cherry blossoms against the blue sky wasn't so difficult (and trust me, for a few other shots I have been laughed just because of the position I was in when I was taking the picture). I just laid in the grass and took photos straight up. 

I hope that you are taking the time to capture the flowers around you. Whether you photograph, draw, stitch, paint, doodle, collage, create them out of paper or have another fun way of making of flowers.

1. Look Up... Earlier this week I received Catherine Just's newsletter. Catherine is a phenomenal photography and so much more...she inspires others to live with intention and from their soul. In her newsletter she encouraged/challenged us to look up and send her the pictures that we took. Well, I happily grabbed my DSL, iPhone and point&shoot and explored. Hours of bliss! (By the way, when you visit her site sign up for her newsletter for some free photo tips.)

2. I am having so much fun learning Instagram on my iPhone by participating in the Paper Coterie photo challenge. I've linked up with some new people and am enjoying the daily theme. Visit my posts from the last 2 Wednesdays to learn more about me as this month's theme is connecting so it is all about me.

3. I recently participated in an Inspiration Deck Swap hosted by the lovely Jessica at In Search of Dessert. I am so grateful for the artists who participated. Each day I flip to a new card in the morning. When I return from my day job I often find myself flipping through a few more.
